AGRIFERT COLLABORATION MODEL

Throughout recent trip missions across Africa, various professional appointments have exposed my staff and associates to the true potentials of farming. Agriculture in Africa has an outstanding social and economic footprint. More than 63% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa is engaged in smallholder farming, and about 24% of sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP comes from the agricultural sector. Yet, the continent’s full agricultural potential remains untapped. In a recent survey, we determined that Africa could produce two to three times more cereal and grain, which would add 20% more cereal and grain to the current worldwide 2.6 billion tons of output. Similar increases are foreseeable in the production of horticulture crops and livestock.

Up until the first part of the 21st Century, compartmentalization would be the key word for African smallholder- farming concept. AGRIFERT is helping  to further accelerate the African agricultural  transformation agenda through bottom-up partnership agreements.

REVAMPING AFRICA'S SOIL FERTILITY

Most relevant research concluded recently that soil fertility provides the foundation for nutritious food production along with resilient and sustainable livelihoods. Recent  research efforts sought to understand barriers to enhancing soil fertility in sub-Saharan Africa have provided evidence-based recommendations focused on West Africa, East Africa, the Great Lakes region, and Ethiopia. Overall, recommendations were developed with the following emerging themes: (i) strengthening inorganic fertilizer-based systems, (ii) capacity building along the entire knowledge-transfer value chain, and (iii) strengthening farming systems research and development across biophysical and socio-economic factors. The evidence-based process and methodology for prioritizing these recommendations has made those findings useful for setting out action plans for future investments and strategies.
